Meet Dale and Alia! Stunningly gorgeous animals. They move so elegantly. They came upstairs after eating a bunch of chicken carcasses in our yard.
Mom: "Could they...eat us?"
Trainer: "Oh don't worry, they just had lunch."
Dale reminded me of Pushkin. The dogs were locked in the kitchen the entire time...it kills me that they'll never know what that smell was! Is that a weird thing to be concerned about when there are two tigers in your house?
Beautiful eyes. So jealous that Lu got the tigers in her bedroom! I have a Vermeer print and a faux-blood-spattered "TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL!" poster on my wall, so my room got nixed. Lulu's bed smelled like tiger (think wet dog meets the zoo) for a week.
Tiger cubs are super playful. Like godzilla kittens with razor-sharp claws. [Edit: Clarification: THE TIGERS WERE NOT DECLAWED. That's cruel.] You know how housecats will paw at your leg? Tigers do the same. They don't actively hunt humans (only polar bears do that, fun fact), but they could totally take you out in good fun.
They brought us tiger outfits in case Dale and Alia "didn't cooperate." Not pictured here: the fishnets, leashes, and striped tails... my dad took one look and was like, "Yeah, I don't think so." Not my cup of tea either. Luckily, the tigers behaved :)
The peerless Martin Schoeller at work...it was an honor to be in his discarded polaroids!
I wore that red dress to prom last year. I think it looked better on my mom...also, 99% of photocreds for this post go to LULU.
Hope you don't mind the picture-heavy post! Any questions about the tigers? Or anything else? Leave me a comment!

Where did you get the tigers? The photos are awesome! How often do you post things, and at what time?
ReplyDeleteGreat job keep it up.
DeleteOh, and can you please post the entire tiger costumes?
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous. I want tigers in my house for a day. Though I dont want my house smelling like wet dog with or without the zoo. You ladies looked beautiful.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I didn't know that about polar bears. eek!
cute pics! and thanks for listening to my request about the email subscription, rly appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the tiger photos, loved them!
ReplyDeletenice pics. Quick questions but what do you like regarding books? Any authors you especially like? (your mom doesn't count!)
ReplyDeleteyou guys are adorable! what was the photoshoot for?

Hi Sophia, I randomly found your blog and you seem like a really sweet and well-adjusted person! I remember when the article about your mom's book came out, and it reminded me some of my childhood. My mom is a professional pianist and she really pushed me to practice music, but thankfully it was something I was drawn to anyway. :) I'm glad my mom pushed me to learn music so well--I am in med school now and playing piano is one of the main ways I retreat from the stress. Hopefully you feel the same way about it!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on getting into Harvard and Yale! Wherever you go, I'm sure you'll do wonderful things. :)
Love the behind-the-scenes pictures from the TIME shoot; the experience seems like it was a blast, and it's nice to get visual assists into exciting happenings in your life.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't find this weird, but can you write more about yourself? I found your blog and about you through the controversy surrounding your mother, and I think it's cool how you're addressing a lot of the negativity about 'tiger parenting' through this blog, but I want to learn about your perspective on subjects other than your mother!
oh my goodness. the tigers are soo pretty! pics look great!
ReplyDeletewhat a fun way to poke fun at this whole tiger-parenting stuff, LOL! when do the pics come out?
ReplyDeleteWhat a fascinating blog! You're insanely lucky to be this close to tigers! Where do they even come from?
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are wonderful! I really enjoyed the one with your Dad and your arms are open - like "WTF Dad!" Keep writing Sophia! I am glad the Yahoo link brought more people to your blog. The comments on Yahoo were very positive. I think more people are realizing how her parenting style is not a bad thing!
ReplyDeleteAw, you guys are gorgeous and it looks like you had so much fun. Thanks for sharing! Btw, I commented before in your second Q&A post.
ReplyDeleteHow does it feel to suddenly have the world watching your family?
Congrats to your mom!
I just wanted to tell you that I think your mom is hilarious, and your family is so cute! :) I grew up in a similar way, and I don't regret anything that happened in my childhood!!
ReplyDeleteLU IS SO PRETTY!
ReplyDeleteWow it really seems like some people don't read the post before asking questions! :) Those tigers are gorgeous, what an experience! PS: Did you swipe some of those polaroids? I totally would have!
ReplyDeleteOMG love this post. Hilarity! You and your sister are gorgeous (and I don't mean that as a creepy/stalker sort of way)
ReplyDeleteI just finished your moms book this week. I started and finished within three days. As a parent of two under three years old, I found her book to be honest, raw and a lovely story.
I highly recommend to everyone. Even have it as a status message on FB.
more photo posts! they make blogs interesting.
ReplyDeleteSo now that you've met both the tigers and your mom, which do you prefer? Hehe, joking. I'm really glad you started a blog. Keep posting, you're so funny! Congrats on the college admissions. You're gonna be soo successful in everything you do! (:
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing!
ReplyDeleteDid you start school late or did you just turn 18 this yr?
ReplyDeleteI found your website perfect for my needs. It contains wonderful and helpful posts. I have read most of them and got a lot from them. To me, you are doing the great work.
ReplyDeleteI about die when my house cat kneads my leg--tigers do that too? Ouch!
ReplyDeleteSOOOO COOL!!!! Can't wait to read the article in TIME. Congrats to u mom. Does Lulu have a blog too?
ReplyDeleteGosh, you're brave! "They don't actively hunt humans" :D Yeah, therefore they're safe to take a photo with :D
ReplyDeletethat's what I think too! My mom always looks better in my clothes than me.
ReplyDeleteman from manila: may i ask you a question? i had a mother who was sort of disciplinarian (we're not chinese, just ordinary Filipinos). she was like marcos and for a while i thought martial law never ended. i hated her. so my question is, was there ever a time when you hated your mom? like when you were a kid and a teenager? you tend to appreciate discipline as you get older, but back then life was hell. thanks.
ReplyDeleteKuddos to you kiddo! I am sure your parents are very proud of you. As a mother of a six year old and three year old, I push my kids because I love them and I only want the best for them. After reading the Wall Street Journal artical about your mom's book,Battle Hymn, I had to read it. While waiting for Battle Hymn, I enjoyed here other two, all three were amazing books. Normally, I don't have time to follow blogs, but my six year old enjoyed the tigers so much, I think we maybe following yours! Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Petro
Tiger Parenting rulz!
ReplyDeleteI haven't even read your mom's book yet (intend to do so in my flight alone to Seoul next month), but I've already heard so much about it. I was brought up in an Asian family as well, so I understand tiger parenting and how well it has benefited me as well, though I believe my parents are considered mild as compared to yours ;)
Btw, those tigers are lovely! I always like tigers, if only they don't bite, I won't mind one in the house.
Do continue to write more, about your life, your thoughts, anything else that you have in your mind. I enjoy your brilliant writing skills very much and I believe many of us would want more!
Dearest Tiger Family,
ReplyDeleteI hope you won't be mad, but I'm just about finished with my new book titled "Tiger Thumb". To give a brief synopsis of my new book; it's a detailed account of my vigorous upbringing of the indoor plants that I keep. For example, I expect all of my plants to follow a strict diet of nutrients, I expect them to grow up perfectly straight by tying them to sticks that I shove into the dirt and I expose them to timely lighting conditions that will vary accordingly by the season I wish to simulate.
Herein lies the problem. I now have all these tree hugging, bare foot, drum circle hippies mailing me death threats and saying; "Hey, man, like, grow your plants the natural way. Like, let them grow free and wild outside, maaaan." You know, like I'm some kind of monster for growing MY plants the way I want to grow them. I think they are just jealous of my 'tiger thumb'.
Anyhow, my book won't be published until I can get my tree outside to mill itself into it's own paper. So, it's not available for purchase yet. What kind of Tiger Thumb would I be if I did it any other way?
Thanks and good luck Tiger Fam!
All three of you are gorgeous! Unfortunately, I won't be picking up Time Magazine (boycotting them for leaving someone important off the death list two years ago...), so I hope I'll find the scans somewhere.
ReplyDeletePoor dogs. ): Mine would go crazy too!
My question is less of a question and more of curiousity... tell us something you adore about Lulu, and something you don't like so much. :D
Thanks!
fishnets and leashes! how scandalous!!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the article!
where did you get your quilt? i love it.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I don't know you... Or your family, which would normally prevent me from commenting on your blog. Yahoo did an interesting article on your blog and I decided to check it out. So, even though I know very little about you or your mother's book, I just wanted to let you know you are hysterically clever and are a great writer! I love reading your posts! So, keep 'em coming!
ReplyDelete+JMJ+
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I found your blog. You're hysterical! And the tigers are so cute! I'm glad they "cooperated." =)
your blog is awesome! so jealous about the tigers! you should make a post about the bf sometime!
ReplyDeleteSophia,
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! Hey, I have a question for your mom, actually. We're moving to MA and I know she researched junior tennis in New England. She mentioned a program she'd found in MA (p.221). Could you let me know the name? We live near Stanford...my boys are with Michael Jessup right now. Thanks so much!
Ok, I'm officially addicted to this blog and have made you a Safari tab. (hah! way to go apple, name totally fits.) So question time: Are there any things about your upbringing that you still don't quite understand/can justify? Come on, there's gotta be something!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I haven't picked up the book yet (my cred just went down, didn't it?) so forgive me if it's addressed there, but I want to hear a little about your senior year/college decision making. As as senior who internet stalks College Confidential and knows way too much about the National Merit process, I'm interested. :) Thanks!
Most of the comments are positive, and I don't want to be a party pooper and all, but I think it's kinda obnoxious and sad to bring real tigers to a suburban home.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they are humanely cared for, etc., etc., but they also likely had to be caged in a car, driven over highways for hours and let us not forget that is a thick chain around their declawed paws. I'd rather they were in Africa in a protected reserve and you all were flown out to do the shoot.
Your dad is the only one that is not a cop-out to this not-so-great tiger scene, why don't you all put on bunny suits if the goal is to just sell more books and create media buzz?
Welcome to the real world.
I concur with Robert666. I also would prefer that these tigers were in one of the many, many African tiger reserves. It is there native land after all. I hear they roam freely with elephants and lions there, and even occasionally frolic with giraffes. And I hold you, personally, responsible for these noble African beasts being denied that opportunity. I hope you feel good about yourself.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophia, I just read all your blog posts. You are clearly a sane, intelligent, and articulate young lady. You mentioned in your earlier post that you wanted comments on what to write about. Why don't you write about your relationship with Lulu? Your mom wrote very little about that in the book.. and I was curious about your opinion.
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia, I just started reading your blog. And I love it! I also have a Chinese mother, and I have so much to relate to. From your writing, you just seem like such an amazing role model. I look up to you so much. Congrats on getting into Harvard and Yale. No matter where you choose, I am sure you will find success :). I am currently a junior in high school. So, I was wondering if you have any advice on the college application process (essay, teacher recommendation,SAT, etc). I will appreciate anything. Thanks in advance!
ReplyDeletenearanddearfromafar - your comment made me literally laugh out loud xD.
ReplyDeleteRandom piano question: favorite composer/piece?
If your mom didn't approve of the title used by the Wall St Journal for the excerpt of her book, why hasn't the WSJ posted a correction?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I really enjoy reading your blog.. I would love to know more about you (and maybe lulu's) personal style and likes and dislikes and whatnot.. books, music, magazines, clothes, etc. What do you tiger cubs do in your spare time? (which I'm sure you have very little of)
ReplyDeleteI"m so jealous! The kitties are awesome! Totally juveniles! Purrrrrr! :)
ReplyDeleteFrom one tiger cub to another?
ReplyDeleteDavid Brooks is speaking at Brandeis's commencement ceremony at the end of the semester. I'm sure you remember him.
Any chance the infamous Tiger Mother would like to make an appearance? :)
Thanks for sharing this latest adventure about your family.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed your mom's book/finished in a few hours and can sort of identify with it. Had me in stitches throughout!!
Am close to both parents as well but closer to mom, born and raised in Asia, college in CA, thought to settle there but now back in Asia, married w 4 kids. Try to raise my kids like how my mom did/similar to what yours did, something I never thought of doing when I was at the receiving end!
And what's funny? Am the dad!
Thanks again. GREAT blog. Keep it up and more power!!
Great blog. I loved your mom's book. The positive side of all the baffling criticism it received is that the book got more exposure. Anyone who has actually read Battle Hymn can only be impressed with you mom's fierce devotion to her family. The book was touching and hilarious and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteOn a purely selfish note, could you upload a recital video? I'm sure a lot of people would love to hear a duet by the cubbies. Thanks.
What does it say about academia when a Yale Law prof gets into the Time's list for a parenting book but not her real scholarship?
ReplyDeleteGreat pics Sophia! Glad you started this blog and have shared so many pics and stories.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been tough to go through and listen to all the criticism.
Come visit over at Yakezie.com or FinancialSamurai.com.
Good luck at Harvard!
Sam
Sophia,
ReplyDeleteI feel like a blog stalker. Haha. I'm not. I promise! Anyway, I think the way you handle the criticism of your childhood is really amazing. I admire you for that. Your mom really is an amazingly influential person, I think, despite other people's criticism. But this photo shoot is really cool. The phrase "tiger mom" can really be used in puns and word plays in clever ways. Haha.
Please keep posting!
Blake
I am looking forward to the Time magazine with your mom in it! She represents for all the tiger moms out there, and you and your sister represent us cubs! (I'm a tiger cub as well born in the year of the tiger.) You and Lulu look gorgeous. I love your blog! Yippee!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I'm curious about your bf! :D
ReplyDeleteIn response to Blake above (Tiger Mom used in puns and wordplays)...don't forget TMILF!
ReplyDelete@ Robert666
ReplyDeleteI don't think that these tigers would enjoy being in an African Reserve, since Asia and not Africa is the native land of Tigers....
My 7 year old brother will be absolutely dying of jealousy...he's completely OBSESSED with tigers! ( I did tease him a lot about "Tiger parenting.)
ReplyDeleteHow come no pictures of the Tiger Mum with the real cubs??
ReplyDeletewere you not scared of the tigers? id be frightened!!!!
ReplyDeletethis is sorda random, but can you do a post on your two dogs? theyre so pretty!
ReplyDeleteSo since it's not possible to "like" a tweet and I don't have twitter I'll use this space to express my appreciation for your tweet concerning seniors complaining about choosing between their amazing school options. I'm a senior too, and I totally agree, nobody's buying it. I love your tweets, they're so funny!
ReplyDeletePlease post a video of yourself playing what you think is the most beautiful piano piece. That'd be so awesome and an inspiration for me ^_^
ReplyDeleteI admire your family. Your mom's description of Tiger Mother being more "old world" than Asian was very apt. My father was right off the boat and I heard all those stories of no heat, no money, no food, the war... very often. I respected my parents more for being that way. When I saw the headline on the Today Show page with the comments of no tv, no sleepovers, etc. I thought my kids were playing a joke on ME and had that set up. SO glad that your mom made me appear less strict to my kids. Of course I immediately showed my kids the online piece! As for the blog: Love the tigers!! You are definitely going wherever your dreams take you. Keep blogging, I'm looking forward to hearing more about your family.
ReplyDeleteWhy are so many asian women such
ReplyDeletepathetic sellouts
Wow nice job with the blog. Keep it going! I liked the pictures. I don't have a specific preference but I like how you format every picture with a little caption.
ReplyDeleteSophia! I don't know if you've committed yet but come to Harvard! You can be my classmate!
ReplyDeleteLove this blog! :)
ReplyDeleteAm so following this!
Hi Sophia, glad you've come up with this blog so we could continue to keep in in touch with your family after reading your mom's book. I was inspired by your mom's book and decided to continue pursuing my love for classical music. I'm also a student from the Philippines so basically we share something ethnically and in our upbringing. Thanks and God Bless on your endeavor's in college.
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteFirst of all congratulations to your whole family.
Your mom shared in her book that you were working on simple set theory when you were 3 years old. Do you mind posting what early learning methods she used to train when you were so young. There are so many different early learning theories starting from montessori, doman, etc. Did she use any of their methods. Expecting a reply for this.
I don't know, tigers have been known to carry off children when their primary food source is scarce. So they do hunt humans, occasionally.
ReplyDeleteWhile I find your blog incredibly entertaining, I also have to say that all these cutesy pics and posts come across as a tad narcissistic/attention-seeking (which is not a good quality imho, but you're mature and in charge of your own life so my judgement mean nothing). :P
ReplyDeletePost suggestions: Perhaps you should do a serious post where you weigh in your thoughts about life and what you hope to gain out of your college experience.. Alternatively, it might be nice to read a fun post on your top five favorite youtube videos of all time or something.. :P
Whatever you do though, please KEEP YOUR BF OUT OF IT!
xoxo
-Faux intellectual badass
Sophia - How did you keep this from me? What a great experience for you and the family (maybe not so much for the dogs). You dad was funny telling me about the dogs reactions and mom offered me more sites. I just started dad's new book so I guess I'm now a Chua - Rubenfeld "Junkie". As usual I love your sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is hilarious. As a law student going through finals, I was relieved to actually laugh for real, instead of making the manic, desperate cackling noise that I have come to think of as a laugh. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteWhat's it like being the kid of two famous law professors? Ever attend any of their classes?
So do you and your mom get along well. I wonder if you feel any type of prolonged anger because of some of her methods. I think you are a typical parent daughter relationship where you have disagreements and stuff like that but is there anything in particular that really just gets under your skin that you won't do when you have children? if you are deciding to have children?
ReplyDeleteSophia, you are a hottie with a body!!
ReplyDeleteSophia,
ReplyDeleteJust finished the book for an upcoming book club meeting. I read it in about 5 hours. I enjoyed your mom's sense of humor and tenacity. Good luck choosing a school. Either will be lucky to have you.
Deborah
hello.
ReplyDeletei am also brought up by strict (well not as strict as your upbringing.. but still..) chinese parenting. i can relate to you SO much.
i really do truly admire you.
and also, you're very pretty(:
have a nice day!
I absolutely love how the tigers eyes become a striking green in the third photo. Tigers are such beautiful animals, and that's amazing that you got to pet them and spend one-on-one time with them.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophia. You are a very talented and funny writer. I loved your mom's book and I admire her for writing it. My husband is Chinese and I am English. We don't do much tiger parenting but I certainly try and raise my own children to respect their background and I strongly dislike many of the western parenting models. I hope my daughter turns into a strong and beautiful woman like you and your sister. Take care.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of this lion cubs hugs video:
ReplyDeletehttp://icanhascheezburger.com/2011/04/25/funny-pictures-videos-lion-cub-hugs/
Oh my God I saw this in Time and was going to come here and ask if they were real!
ReplyDeleteSo they really like to be pet? The flash doesn't spook them? I suppose if someone has allot of money to buy a few rotisserie chickens each night and some mouthwash (to put on the tiger smell)... they would be a great pet!
Have you decided on Harvard? Any thoughts on the yuckiness-New Haven? ;) Bye
this has nothing to do with the tiger pictures (sorry?) but do you think that you would have turned out more like how people expect from reading the book if both of your parents were tiger parents, or do you think that your mother's way is the best?
ReplyDeleteLove the tiger pictures!! And your mom did look pretty your red prom dress.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophia!
ReplyDeleteI'm deciding between Yale and Harvard too.
Someone started a Facebook group for H/Y cross admits to serve as an open forum for discussion if you're interested :)
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_166561690067572
The pictures are lovely! And cute :)
ReplyDeleteHow was the gala? Is it possible to post some of those pictures too? I hope it was a fun experience!!
Hi Sophia. Your blog and the controversy surrounding your mom's book inspired me to write a fresh blogpost: http://tinyurl.com/3mzqfca (Don't worry. I say nice things.) The photos are awesome. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNo one gives a shit about you or your mother. Get lost.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to be reading your blog and finding out that you are well adjusted and happy. I read your mother's book with great interest and am incorperating some of her dedication and energy into raising my 2 young kiddies. Your family is clearly exceptional in many ways and you have such a bright future ahead of you. I want the same for my children but was afraid to "damage" them. Glad to see you are doing great!
ReplyDeleteI would just like to say that you look A LOT like Rumi Neely of fashiontoast sometimes! And love your blog, you're really relateable! ^^
ReplyDeleteI think your blog is cute, and I enjoy reading it during my downtime at work (shh, don't tell anyone that I have downtime), but I was disappointed to see that real tigers were used in your photo shoot. These majestic creatures should be out in the wild, not chained up and subjected to hot lamps and bright flashes. You said in an earlier blog that you care about the environment...well what about animals?
ReplyDeleteReally your post is really very good and I appreciate it. It’s hard to sort the good from the bad sometimes, but I think you’ve nailed it. You write very well which is amazing. I really impressed by your post.
