q+a: burnout

Hey hey! Busy semester, which I'll tell you more about soon. I felt like answering some non-ponderous questions  to unwind, so here you are.

Q: How tall are you?
A: My driver’s license says 5'4. That is a heinous lie I told the DMV so they would underestimate my potential. I’m actually way taller.

Q: How’s Arabic going?
A: Turns out you can’t start Arabic second semester, so I’m taking Chinese instead! It’s great, Harvard has an accelerated class for “heritage speakers,” which is a nice way of saying “Chinese for Chinese Kids Who Can’t Read Good.” We’re actually a significant demographic.

Q: Have you gone to any Red Sox games?
A: First of all, the only thing I like about the Red Sox is the tears their fans shed when they lose. Second, recall that – in tandem with the only gruesome, come-from-behind Yankee loss I’ve ever cheered for – the Red Sox botched their wild card spot and didn’t make the playoffs last fall, so there hasn’t been much baseball to see here. But yes, I’m adding “make a  New York cheering squad at Fenway” to my bucket list now. If I get killed, you can blame yourself.

Q: Can you post about your dogs?
A: I'm dying. First pic is Push from my cell phone. The second is Coco, by Lulu. If you want more Lulu (and I know all of you do), check out her new tumblr: http://luluchuarubenfeld.tumblr.com/

Q: Do you find it strange to see yourself on TV or being talked about?
A: Yes, it gives me goosebumps! Especially because the TV networks somehow found this hideous, middle-school picture of me wearing a mustard-colored Life is Good shirt that they display EVERY SINGLE TIME WITHOUT FAIL NO MATTER HOW MANY OTHER PHOTO OPTIONS THEY HAVE. Sorry, vain. But come on, Today Show, have a heart. Oh wait, I forgot. You are totally out of touch with the American population and STILL think people want to hear you rag on my family.

Q: What computer do you have?
A: This super jacked-up Toshiba Portege 9700. There are all these exposed wires and the CD drive fell out (but actually). That said, it’s feather-light and it’s not an Apple product, so I love it to death.

Q: What’s the best thing that happened to you lately?
A: I faceplanted while running, sliced open my knee, left a trail of blood along the Charles, and was in the process of smearing blood on an illustrious bridge when a stranger in a car rolled down her window, handed me a wad of tissues, and drove away. Faith in humanity restored.

next post will probably be an update on what's new with school this semester. also considering a post on "how to do high school like a tigercub." any other suggestions?

I'm a fresh[wo]man and have always thought high school as not hard at all, but recently, I've been nearing a B. In your opinion, does GPA matter? Does a major [asian] dent in your report card mean anything?

  13. Yes, please do make a post about this semester, tell us all about the countless hours that you spend studying or doing whatever it is you are doing that is causing your burnout.

I absolutely loved your mom's book, but I got the impression that she's not one to appreciate sleep all that much. For example, during the birthday card "incident", she said you should have gotten up earlier to make a nicer card. She also stated something like "as a purely mathematical fact, people who sleep less live more". She clearly knows that in reality that's not true, but the intent of that statement seems to be that one shouldn't sleep too much.

The fact is, if you don't have a stable sleep schedule that you follow religiously, you are losing out on productivity, because your executive function is always negatively impacted whenever you don't sleep as long as the brain needs or if you disturb the circadian rhythm. Increased stress levels and bad mood are another problem.

I am sure you know all this. All I am trying to say is, please be sure to get enough sleep every single night! It's too easy to lose out on sleep in college. Too many college students don't have good sleep habits not because they have too much work to do, but because they abuse the system. All-nighters, late-night partying, daily caffeine consumption all actually disrupt your productivity.

  14. Half the pictures on Lulu's tumblr make me want to travel to wonderful, exotic places, and the other half make me want to never eat again.

But really, I'm glad that she's sharing a little bit about herself online. And it's clear that she has a passion for photography-- good luck, Lulu!

    1. Not necessarily. A very talented person, who is good at and likes every subject, can have a hard time deciding which field to dedicate her life to. Even once decided, it doesn't mean that person doesn't want to do anything else, hence some people have double-, even triple-majors.

Furthermore, college is about exploring and trying many things more in-depth than in high school, which simply can't offer as great a variety of courses as a higher education juggernaut like Harvard.

  42. Sophia, How dare you let your sister get a Tumblr? Get Lulu out of tumblr NOW!!!!!!!!! I mean it. Tumblr is a vortex, a drug and a sickness. How could you let her do that? Don't you like your sister? I thought you liked your sister. You only have one you know. We all love Lulu, we do, please save her. She needs to sleep and study and have a real life. It is still time you know, althought she's already becoming a quite frequent reblogger....I'm just kidding, but seriously, don't let her get into it. Getting out of it is harder than quitting any addiction because Tumblr is so mentally and emotionally, damaging and obsessive and exalting and time consuming. You don't sleep anymore, you're always keeping track of your followers or scrolling down your board like a frantic mad person, reblogging and hearting flower pictures, food pictures, harry Potter pictures, Harry Styles pictures, One Direction pictures...Oh my God, Tumblr is amazing, okey, okey....take a long breath. Think, think...you are doing so well, you don't need this, you're a better person now.... Okey, , relax...Relax... I don't need this...I NEED to get my Tumblr back!..... What was my password?, oh God what email did I use....urghhh, Come one let me in! What are my followers doing, oh God...please take me back, please, I love you! I'm so sorryyy

    1. This seems like it was a well-meaning post, but quite frankly, I don't think tumblr is a vortex at all. I've been maintaining mine for the past two or three months and its never used up more than a reasonable amount of time each (or every other) day.
Also, let's have a little bit of faith in Lulu. She can probably exercise whatever self restraint is necessary to avoid complete tumblr takeover! Hopefully, right?!

  50. Hi Sophia. I am an international student and will be applying to colleges in the united states this year - including Harvard. I am, however, a bit ambivalent about the environment at Harvard. Are all classes really big? Does a student get any attention by the professors? And most of all, is Harvard potentially a good place for an international medical school aspirant? I know my questions are asking ALOT of things but please do give your take on whatever possible.

With that aside (and as a HUGE Yankees fan), your comments about the Red Sox now makes me a fan of YOU! I only regret that I didn't know someone like you when I was a younger man - I would have had a massive school-boy crush on you.

    1. it's so cool that Jeremy Lin said that he would have had a massive school-boy crush on you!
I'm kind of perplexed by what you said in your most recent post, though... How do you not think that he's an exception to the rule? I feel like most Chinese parents would have insisted that he not practice so much basketball and instead spend that time applying to med school. In fact, most Chinese kids I know don't take risks or aren't daring enough with activities or fields they really, really love and instead just do what their parents want them to. It just seems like Chinese parents want to use basketball or piano to get their kids into Harvard but afterward, it's always med school. I mean, look at you? You love piano but why don't you practice piano as much as you used to once you got into Harvard?

And for the record, Jeremy Lin is a devout Christian and wants to be a pastor after the NBA.

  64. Okay, so sorry for not replying to your tweet on twitter (I feel awkward tweeting at you when my friends are like "who's that girl you're tweeting at again?" and I have to awkwardly explain that I'm a 19 year old girl who enjoys reading memoirs about parenthood and cultural differences for fun. Plus you never respond, not that you necessarily should, but it makes me feel weird and somehow like more of a creeper than commenting on your blog does.) But you HAVE to tell us about what went down in that discussion regarding the healthcare debate! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, I'm sure you could tell it in such a funny way, and it's fun picturing you getting in a spat with someone, since you don't strike me as someone who shies away from sharing her opinions. Not that I'm asking for a Real World: Tiger Cub edition just to get all voyeuristic with someone else's drama, but now that you've baited us on Twitter I'd love to hear more about a concrete example of you strongly asserting your opinion, since critics seem to think you can't do that but readers of your blog know you actually relish it.

Though I understand if you kinda want to keep politics out of your blog... though that's hardly been the case thus far.

Good wishes as always, looking forward to anything you may choose to share! :)

P.S. I lolled when I clicked the comment submitting button and the security box popped up with the heading "please prove that you are not a robot". hehehe

  66. If you want more Lulu, she runs her own online bookstore: www.lulu.com. It even has a My Lulu section as well as a Lulu Blog Headlines ticker.

Impressive, I say. She must want to outperform her big sister and pay for her college tuition all by herself, unlike Sophia, who is mooching off her poor hardworking mom and dad. And that's on top of school, tennis, violin, piano, dog walking, photography, tumblr, and I am sure I am forgetting many more things that Sophia would never be able to do half as good as her little sister.

I am only trolling, Sophia! I think you are an admirable person who inspires everyone around her. Please don't be mad.

On a serious note, I really admire how both you and Lulu handled the crazy Mrs. Kazinczy. I guess Lulu bore the brunt of it, but you also took the whole thing in stride.

  68. are Dance Moms a relative of Tiger Moms?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Depends, do Dance Moms make sure their kids excel at academics above all else? For example, Jeremy Lin's mother once told his coach that if Jeremy didn't get his A- in some Harvard course back to A within a week, she'd take him off basketball.

It pains me when parents let their children get B+'s and A-'s at school, which basically says either "Our Bobby just isn't good enough mentally/genetically to get A's" or "Well, being excellent at what you do is not important, our Bobby will do just fine by swindling other people out of their honestly-earned money, those suckers. His fathers connections will too get him through life".

When you were in high school, did you ever pull any all nighters to finish assignments? if not, what was the latest you have ever stayed up doing assignments?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Don't know if she ever pulled an all-nighter, but she did spend a lot of time in the library. Also, before her Carnegie Ball performance, her mom made her drill until 1AM and that Carnegie thing was a big deal, so I am pretty sure both Sophia and her mom normally prefer to go to bed on time most other times.
